Galaxy M82 is the second largest member of an association which includes M81 and five smaller galaxies. It is classified as an irregular galaxy due to its disturbed core and lack of distinct spiral arms. It is located in the constellation Ursa Major about 11.5 million light-years away. All the "dots" in this image are foreground stars located in the Milky Way.
